This years’ edition of Computer Studies for Uganda is out! Some of the updates and changes are outlined below:
- Revised and expanded chapter on Trends in Computing, now consisting of clear coverage of all the six subtopics (Computer Integrity and Security, Computer Ethics, Computers and Society, Emerging Technologies, Systems Analysis, and Computer professions) as per the syllabus.
- Updated chapter on Computer Communication and Networking and , specifically notes on classification of Wireless Transmission Media and technologies.
- Updated chapter on computer software, specifically improved notes on software suites.
- Updated notes on all practical topics (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Web design and database), Office 2003 procedures removed, replaced by Office 2007 and 2013. Theory on powerpoint has been updated with notes on qualities of a good presentation.

About the book
‘Computer Studies for Uganda’ is a textbook primarily based on Uganda Secondary School Ordinary O’ Level (UCE S1-S4) Computer Studies Syllabus 840 by National Curricullum Development Center (NCDC). It covers both Theory and Practical topics – with Complete notes on all the twelve chapters in the syllabus (i.e from Introduction, Evolution to Trends in computing).
Following UNEB’s 27th June 2016 Circular ( https://ereg.uneb.ac.ug/files/roHK3_ComputerStudies8400001.pdf ) in which schools offering computer studies (840) were notified of changes in setting of exams – that new topics (i.e. Elementary Computer Programming, System startup and Configuration and Trends in computing) were to start featuring in UNEB examinations, – and that Two programming languages C and Visual Basic were to be used during the teaching of elementary computer programming, we have therefore included full coverage of these new topics in the book.
The book contains revised notes on programming (program development life cycle, program design with pseudo code and flow charts, using BOTH C AND Visual Basic programming languages, PLUS how to use Microsoft Excel’s Visual Basic for Applications to write simple programs and demonstrate the programming principles even when you dont have the full Visual Studio software or Compilers like CodeBlocks, Borland or DevC++ for the case of C programming).
Web design is covered first through theory notes on all aspects of the topic as per the syllabus and then HTML basics given with simple coding activities as outlined in the syllabus. Finally, a simple tutorial on how to use (the readily available) Ms Publisher to create simple websites and excel during UCE 840/2 examinations is given at the end of the topic.
In this book, we have arranged all content in an easy to read mode to enable students read ahead, there are a number of activity based exercises, Multiple Choice Questions, essay questions, and practical exercises to enable our students be possessed with enough activity to do. Teachers will find this book very helpful, especially those with big classes in terms of dividing theory and practical lesson time appropriately.
