The 2022 edition of the Annual African Code Challenge by africacodeweek.org is here!
The participating children will have to code a sustainable solution to an environmental issue in their community, under the theme, Protecting Life Together. New this year: the game will have to be collaborative (2 players, 2 characters, etc.).
The Challenge is open to students aged 8 to 16, competing individually.
•A teacher, adult supervisor or code club volunteer needs to initially register the participants. No external coaching will be allowed.
•Participants can register at any time so long as they feel they can complete the task by the submission deadline set for their country by the ambassador.
According to Uganda’s Africa Code Week Ambassador, Valentine Masicha Wegoye, the submission deadline for Uganda has been extended to 30th November, 2022, and the submission link is https://bit.ly/ACCUGANDA
•The game MUST be coded with Scratch
•Video is 3 minutes max! Any video that exceeds this limit will have points deducted
•Winner needs to be available for a prize giving ceremony to be held in the team’s local community.
•Winners automatically agree to compete in the Africa-wide competition.
Past Editions
The AfriCAN Code Challenge 2021 tasked participants to code a game using the Scratch programming language to answer the question: “How will your tech change the future of education?”. In total, 40 countries participated and over 100 project videos were submitted. Below are some of the videos submitted from Uganda.

ACW Teaching and Learning Resources
To prepare learners for the challenge, teachers can make use of several resources available on the Africa Code Week Website at https://africacodeweek.org/teach/resources/ in addition to lots of tutorials on YouTube.
Africa Code Week Team has also prepared and shared comprehensive materials, including the “Beginners Scratch” activity book and the “Coding Unplugged” Activity Book.
Beginners Scratch has several activities for coding with computers using Scratch, while the Coding Unplugged book teaches computational thinking as a foundation for coding skills through developing the learners’ ability to problem-solve and think logically through unplugged (no-computer) lessons which help students visualize programming concepts in daily life.
More About Africa Code Week 2022
In celebration of World Teachers Day 2022, Africa Code Week (ACW) officially launched its exciting 2022 program with an online panel discussion. This year’s World Teachers Day theme: “the transformation of education begins with teachers,” marked the occasion, which hosted key partners and international speakers from SAP, UNESCO, ADEA and the Camden Education Trust.
Since 2015, ACW has firmly positioned itself as Africa’s biggest digital skills program. This year’s initiative will continue to reach all corners of Africa, leaving no child or youth behind. The 2022 rollout includes ambitious plans to partner closely with policymakers and governments to help transform Africa’s education agenda by adding digital literacy to the national curricula. Currently, nine African countries have officially adopted coding as a mandatory subject in public education.
In addition to the African Code Challege for the children, ACW 2022 also has Train The Trainer (TTT) sessions for empowering the teachers with digital skills. In Uganda, the first TTT session was conducted on 17th October 2022 at Makerere Innovation and Incubation Center.
The local Implementation Partners for Africa Code Week in Uganda include Mindset Coders, The WIT Ltd, ICT Teachers Association of Uganda (ITAU), Code Academy Uganda, KAWA, Maarifasasa, Teachers in Need and Irish Aid.
